Drive a Ferrari 458 Italia On a Racetrack!

Ferrari continues to improve upon perfection with the 458 Italia. The Ferrari 458 Italia is a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive V-8 Berlinetta that was first unveiled to the public on September 15, 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Designed to be a successor to the Ferrari F430, the 458 Italia is derived from an entirely new design platform which intergrates technology developed from Ferrari’s involvement in Formula 1.  more on the Ferrari 458 >

Expectations were high for the 458 especially after the success of the 430. Needless-to-say the F430 and the 430 Scuderia are very impressive, and any replacement would have very large shoes to fill. Ferrari did not disappoint. The 458 Italia tops its predecessors in all categories, not only raising the bar at Ferrari, but setting a new standard for all exotic supercars. With blinding acceleration and superior handling, the Ferrari 458 Italia can do a quarter mile in 10.8 seconds and corners like it's glued to the asphalt leaving drivers begging for more. This car is so exciting it should have come standard with a heart defibrilator.

Derived from the shared Ferrari/Maserati engine department, (Maserati has essentially been the luxury division of Ferrari since Ferrari took full control in 1999 after having a majority stake in the company since 1997) the 458 Italia produces 560 hp at a screaming 9,000 rpm. 398 foot pounds of torque are delivered at 6,000 rpm, with 80% percent of the torque at 3,250 rpm! The naturally aspirated engine features direct fuel injection, a first for Ferrari mid-engine street cars. 0-60 mph takes just 3.3 seconds with a top speed of 202 mph. Breaking the 200 mph barrier, makes the Ferrari 458 Italia the first volume production Ferrari to scale the 200 mph mark.

Unlike other models of Ferrari, the 458 Italia has only one transmission option. The 458 utilizes a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox that directs power to the rear axle. The 458 does not come with the option of a manual transmission, marking it only the fourth model in Ferrari’s long history in which a manual transmission is not offered. The other models not to include a manual option were the Enzo, Challenge Stradale and the 430 Scuderia.

Ferrari introduced a new design concept whereby the 458 Italia carbon-ceramic brakes include a prefill function that forces the pistons within the calipers to push the pads into contact with the discs on launch, eliminating the delay when the brakes are applied. This concept added to the pre-existing antilock braking system (ABS) creates a drastic improvement to breaking, bringing the vehicle from 62 mph to 0 mph in 107 feet.

Ferrari Formula 1 driver and racing superstar, Michael Schumacher participated in the exterior and interior designs of the 458 Italia. In collaboration with Carozzeria Pininfarina who have been involved with all of Ferrari’s exteriors of late, the F458 was designed with aerodynamic efficiency and downforce as a top priority including the deformable winglets of the front grill that lower at high speeds to reduce drag and increase downforce. An ironic turn of events considering it was the late Enzo Ferrari himself who said "Aerodynamics are for people who can't build engines." Nevertheless Ferrari engineers remain confident that Enzo would have been pleased with the 458 Italia.

The interior design features many changes, notably the relocation of many column stock controls to the steering wheel, giving a more Formula 1 type feel. This was done to create unimpeded access to the paddle shifters. The turn signals take a little getting used to since they have been turned into buttons on the steering wheel, initially creating a very unnatural feel. Other questionable design choices include placing navigation controls along with audio controls in pods that flank the steering wheel, making access to these items impossible for a passenger. Additional cabin improvements include a repositioning of the driver seating position, creating a much more comfortable seating position than what was offered in previous Ferrari models.

If you thought that Ferrari could not top the success of the 430 line, prepare to be pleasantly surprised with the superior handling and performance of the Ferrari 458 Italia. Being that Ferrari has once again raised the bar considerably higher than what was available to previous volume production models, this begs the question: what will Ferrari do next?

Ferrari 458 Italia

"The Ferrari 458 Italia is a personal favorite of mine, as well as the majority of the instructors in the staff. The car has a very light steering wheel, very fast shifting and an awesome V8 engine. This makes the 458 both very easy to drive and very exciting when approaching the limit."

Great experience if you are a car person. I had a reasonably expensive experience, so we had VIP lounge access. A bit disappointed in the VIP room. It would be nice if the VIP room was set up to view the track from inside the room. My wife does not get into cars, so I would like her to be as comfortable as possible when we go to Exotics Racing. We will be back! Possibly some light sandwiches or fresh fruit in the VIP experience as well. The entire staff, (all areas) are extremely accommodating and outstanding. Had two different instructors in three different cars. I was very pleased with the first instructor. The second instructor was absolutely outstanding and I was so pleased with him that I intend to request him on every visit. This was my second time at Exotics. *** was the name of the instructor that I was so very pleased with. *** pushed me as hard as as I could go and my lap times continued to drop. I really fed off of him not allowing me to be lazy and to stay totally focused and committed to my lines and anticipation of oncoming portions of the track. Very impressed with your instructors. *** is awsome, ride along always spices the day up. Just watching the ride along car tear it up is cool! Nice exhaust on ride along car! Initial instruction was great, brief and to the point. Recommend this experience to everyone.

We absolutely LOVED our experience! It was our first time, but certainly not our last! My husband and I both thought the order of things made sense and worked well for us. The staff were all extremely patient, helpful, and kind. The only criticism we would have to offer is that we were not informed ahead of time to bring cash if we would like to tip our instructors, which we luckily we did have cash on us... I would suggest putting the tipping information as part of the booking or checkout process. Also, we would both like to offer a personal compliment to our instructor Michael (big red beard). He was absolutely amazing at learning our different personalities quickly and then adjusting accordingly so as to make our experience the best it could be! Not to mention how congenial and knowledgeable he was!

Overall experience was awesome. Great people, cars in great shape. where else can you drive this array of high performance vehicles on a track, where they belong? Safety was always a priority. Flew 10 hours from South America to do this. Can´t wait to go back. thanks! CARLO ALCANTARA- Lima, PERU

A great experience - a real class act. My one worry was that the cars would be rev-limited or governed in some way. Not so. You get to go flat out - a much as the cars - or your nerves - will do. Also, the ride-along instructors were great, and will encourage you to go faster with each lap. There is no holding back - these are fast cars and you get to drive them fast. Highly recommended.

December 30, 2016

I just spent the day at the High Performance Driving Experience (HPDE) package at Exotics Racing in Las Vegas. It was an entire day with personalized VIP treatment and detailed instruction with the goal to allow me to drive a model of the same vehicle I own back in NY at its maximum performance. Although my day was with the McLaren 570S, I understand I was fortunate as that vehicle is in high demand. I can see why! I flew out from NY just for this purpose. It was amazing! My personal instructor was JD (Josh), and he was obviously passionate about the fundamental principles of track driving, cars and everything about them. His history of racing added legitimacy and he really tuned into my goals of being able to push my car to its limits but realized I wasn’t trying to start a career in racing. I felt the day was special as soon as I arrived. I was greeted with enthusiasm by the staff and after an orientation by JD in the race trailer, I was offered the opportunity to wear a racing suit and shoes. I chose yes, and it added to the experience for sure. JD was very detailed in explaining the fundamental principles of track driving of which I had some un answered questions about prior to arriving. All answered now. He then throughout the day related those principles as he sat next to me as I drove their version of my Mclaren 570S ( Orange instead of white). I know some manufacturers offer test drives but this experience of driving this car was amazing! Being able to take my vehicle on a track with many variety of turns, with an experienced instructor coaching me as I head into a tight turn at 120 mph and trail braking is just something that is rare. After a full day of challenging the Mclaren and me, I am looking forward to do this once a year. At the end of the day I opted to run the new Ferrari 488 for 5 laps with JD. I have to say adding the Ferrari on to compare was a great choice. At that point I was comfortable with track and basic principles of driving. (My best lap was with the McLaren at just under 57 seconds) The McLaren I felt was right there with regards to speed and handling, which is an amazing tribute to the Mclaren 570S. An amazing day, an amazing opportunity. I am looking forward to doing this as often as I can to improve my driving skills and keep up with the latest supercars on the planet.
